An opportunity has arisen for a permanent appointment into a Public Health Scientist within the Health Protection Division, Public Health Wales with a focus on research and epidemiology.
You will join the dynamic and innovative Communicable Disease Inclusion Health Programme (CDIHP) within Health Protection.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will help develop and shape a robust and impactful programme of research, evaluation, and surveillance to improve understanding and drive action on the key health protection challenges faced by inclusion health groups in Wales. You will work closely with the Principal Researcher, CDIHP, and collaboratively with other programme leads within CDIHP and the wider Health Protection Division to develop innovative research and provide leadership and direction to partners engaging in public health research and evaluation activities. You will work in partnership with academic and external colleagues to design and conduct research, evaluation, surveillance, and develop research funding proposals.
Job responsibilities
Working across the wider team to successfully provide specialist expertise to design and deliver robust research projects, under the overall guidance of the CDIHP Programme Leads, you will contribute through the production of
- quality, impactful evidence targeted to key audiences. You will be driven and have good project management skills, manage your time effectively, and be experienced with information and research governance and good research practice around research and evaluation activities.
Person Specification
QUALIFICATIONS & KNOWLEDGE
- Educated to degree Level or equivalent in a scientific or
- related subject with a strong research and/or evaluation component. - Postgraduate diploma or Master's degree in health, social science, or public health research.
- Demonstrable training/experience in public health, health protection, or epidemiology.
- Knowledge of a range of quantitative methods for research and evaluation.
- Knowledge of methods to manage and analyse complex linked data sources.
- Understanding and application of NHS research, ethics, data and information governance processes, policies, and procedures.
- Ph
D in a Public Health-related subject, or equivalent level of experience in public health. - Evidence of an ongoing commitment to professional development (CPD).
- Knowledge of Public Health policies and strategies in Wales.
- Knowledge of health inequalities and inclusion health populations.
- Knowledge of issues related to public health and sexual health.
Experience
- Demonstrable experience leading to highly developed specialist knowledge in research or evaluation applied to public health or related field.
- Experience of leading, developing, and delivering research to drive action within public health policy and/or practice, or in a related field.
- Experience of projects or evaluations, including analysing and writing up findings.
- Experience of patient and public involvement in research, particularly of working with inclusion health populations.
- Previous experience of developing research proposals and funding applications.
- An academic track record of
- reviewed publications. - Data management (new and routinely collected data) and analytical skills.
- Advanced coding skills in a range of analytical software packages (e. g. , R, STATA, MS Access, SQL).
- Excellent written and presentation communication skills.
- Effective stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to translate complexity into operational plans and actions.
- Excellent organisational skills with an ability to plan, manage time, and prioritise own work and that of others effectively.
- Demonstrated facilitative and negotiating skills.
