OPEN CALL FOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
Nova SBE/BII/2025/09
A call for applications for 4 (four) Research Initiation Fellowships is open at Nova School of Business and Economics (NOVA SBE) under the Project “Decentralizing Portugal with Blockchain”, funded under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), Component 5 - Business Capitalization and Innovation, with the following conditions:
Management, Technology, Economics or Data Analytics.
In the scope of the present project, UNL, through Nova SBE, is collaborating with different Portuguese companies to support them in developing new products and services based on blockchain technology. Therefore, Nova SBE aims to investigate how society perceives and interacts with such technological innovations, for example, by developing field experiments to support its partners in validating and
- tuning their products. Among the main sectors, the carbon credit market, loyalty programs, the real estate sector, and platforms for managing digital communities stand out. For this Research Initiation Scholarship, the research will focus on developing methodologies to improve the accuracy of Scope 2 and Scope 3 carbon footprint calculations. While Scope 1 emissions are
- documented, Scope 2 and 3 estimations involve multiple assumptions. This project aims to refine emission factors and methodologies, ensuring more precise business calculations.
The candidates to be recruited will be responsible for the development of the following activities:
- Conduct a comprehensive analysis of existing methodologies for Scope 2 and Scope 3 carbon footprint calculations, identifying best practices and gaps.
- Identify and validate the most relevant queries, variables, and emission factors for precise footprint calculation.
- Work closely with the partner to align research findings with the platform’s development requirements.
- Contribute to the design and execution of the pilot program, collecting insights to refine the methodology and improve platform implementation.
- Deliver a final report summarizing findings, methodologies, and recommendations for integrating results into the software.
Academic Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in a master's program at an institution recognized by Portugal;
- Be in the semester preceding the one where they will undertake their master thesis;
- Strong interest in sustainability, carbon footprint calculations, and digital solutions.
Areas with research experience:
- Environmental Science, Sustainability, Economics, Management, or a related field.
- Excellent communication skills to present findings effectively in written and oral formats;
- Ability to structure research activities within a given timeline and contribute to an agile development approach.
- Ability to conduct research independently and collaborate in a team.
The chosen candidates will be requested to:
- Conduct literature review and industry research; define key metrics and methodologies.
- Validate findings with industry partners; refine emission calculation methodologies.
- Support the implementation of methodologies into the digital platform; participate in the pilot program and collect insights.
- Deliver a final report summarizing findings, methodologies, and recommendations for integrating results into the software.
- Outline how this research can be extended into the candidate’s master thesis, ensuring continuity and further exploration of the topic.
The research will be conducted at Nova School of Business and Economics under the scientific supervision of Professor Leid Zejnilovic.
The fellowship will have a duration of 9 months, with the possibility of renewal for the length of the project, subject to an annual review. The fellowship will be awarded on an exclusive basis, as stated in Regulations for Nova SBE Scholarships and/or Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships of FCT, I. P.
The fellowship amounts between 651, 12€ and 1. 302, 24€, depending on the experience presented, and according to the table of monthly stipends available in the Regulations for Nova SBE Scholarships.
The selection will be carried upon the evaluation of academic merit (80%) and motivation letter (20%).
All candidates will be notified by email.
The call is open from March 14 to 27, 2025.
Applications must be submitted by email to research. office@novasbe. pt, under the subject Nova SBE/BII/2025/09, and must include the following documents (mandatory):
