Job Description:
About you:
The Credit Risk Analyst will be a strategic role within Risk Management Function. Ensuring the use of best practices in credit risk assessment and corresponding compliance with the notices and instructions from Bank of Portugal and the EBA Guidelines namely the Guidelines on loan origination and monitoring.
The role entails designing, implementing, and maintaining robust risk management frameworks, policies, and procedures to identify, measure, monitor, and mitigate credit risk.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in credit risk analysis and management within banking or fintech environment, strong leadership abilities, and a passion for innovation.
Your Responsibilities:
Risk Governance and Framework
- Develop and implement credit risk management policies, procedures, and practices in alignment with best practices and Guidelines on loan origination and monitoring.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including regular reporting to the Bank of Portugal and other supervisory bodies.
- Ensure the integration of credit risk assessments into credit
- making processes.
Risk Identification and Assessment
- Conduct detailed credit risk assessments of individual loan applications for SME and corporate exposures.
- Analyze financial statements, industry trends, and macroeconomic factors to determine creditworthiness.
- Ensure compliance with the EBA Guidelines on Loan Origination and Monitoring, including proper assessment of borrower affordability and sustainability.
- Perform risk assessments on new products, services, and significant business changes.
- Conduct stress testing and scenario analysis to evaluate potential vulnerabilities on the credit portfolio.
Risk Monitoring and Reporting
- Monitor credit exposures and identify early warning signs of potential defaults.
- Design and implement key risk indicators (KRIs) and thresholds for ongoing risk monitoring.
- Prepare credit risk reports for senior management, regulatory bodies and regulatory authorities.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of credit risk assessments and monitoring activities.
- Monitor risk exposures and escalate any breaches or
- breaches promptly. - Work with the collections and restructuring teams to mitigate potential credit losses.
Model Development
- Collaborate on model development for
- adjusted returns on lending. - Participation in designing and developing internal credit rating models, including PD (Probability of Default), LGD (Loss Given Default), and EAD (Exposure at Default) models.
- Working with Basel III/IV requirements for IRB (Internal Ratings-Based) models.
- Hands-on experience in developing scorecards, risk grading systems, and ratings overrides processes.
Data Management
- Working with large and complex datasets from credit portfolios.
- Knowledge of data quality assurance practices and tools to ensure data reliability.
User Experience
- Collaborate with product, IT, and user support teams to enhance the

- end user journey. - Ensure timely resolution of user issues and delivery of exceptional service.
Policy review, updates, audit:
- Develop, improve and maintain policies and procedures and user manuals for the risk management function for credit risk.
- Recommend enhancements to systems and processes.
- Ensure that any audit points have been addressed and cleared in a reasonable time.
What’s your ideal background?
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business administration, risk management, or a related field.
- A master’s degree or MBA with a focus on risk management or financial services is highly desirable.
- Professional certifications such as FRM (Financial Risk Manager), PRM (Professional Risk Manager), or certifications from the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) are advantageous.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in credit risk management within banking or financial services.
- Demonstrable experience working with regulatory frameworks, particularly Aviso 3/2020 (Bank of Portugal) and EBA Guidelines on Loan Origination and Monitoring.
- Experience in developing and implementing credit risk management frameworks, policies, and tools.
- Proficiency in risk management software and financial analysis tools.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of credit risk management principles, practices, and tools (e. g. , stress testing, risk appetite frameworks, KRIs).
- Proficiency in regulatory requirements, including IFRS9 and Basel III/IV standards.
- Statistical and Analytical Tools: Proficiency in R, Python, SAS, MATLAB, or Stata for model development and validation and knowledge of SQL for database querying and data manipulation will be a plus.
- Familiarity with tools like Tableau, Power BI, or other visualization platforms to present findings effectively.

- In-depth understanding of European and Portuguese banking regulations, including:
- Aviso 3/2020 and related Bank of Portugal circulars.
- EBA Guidelines on internal governance, Loan Origination and Monitoring, and stress testing.
- IFRS9 accounting standard
- Basel Accords and EU regulations on credit risk management.
- Strong understanding of Basel regulations, EBA IRB model validation guidelines, and local regulatory frameworks.
